Castell Beaumaris

Castell Beaumaris's magnificent size, shape and part-ruined state speaks to the folly of attempting to conquer Ynys Môn.
The castle was intended to be the crowning glory of King Edward I at the gateway to the island. It was huge, ambitious and loudly trumpeted its might to the rest of Cymru. However, it could never be finished. Despite intense efforts and the appointment of the famed James of St George to design it, it could not be completed and James died leaving it forever half-made.
It is a liminal place, with unusual time-slowing, which could be due to the influence of the goddess Rhiannon, who was sighted there in the 1780s. It is a place where you can get easily lost, and no visit there can ever be fully finished. Itineraries inevitably miss out some items, conversations fizzle out and attention wanders. This was noted by J.M.W Turner, who painted the castle after several failed attempts (see drawing) but felt he had never quite completed the work. The Princess Victoria (later to be Queen) visited at the age of 13 and was frustrated at the fact that every excursion "seemed unaccountably to be cut short".
The castle has been a place of sightings of the Cath Palug on the strait.
