The moat possesses one of the most effective defences in warfare - a gwrach y rhibyn. This ghastly creature (a "hag of the mist") was brought here through the veil by a cunning man working for Gilbert de Clare. He could not control it, however, and it eventually took him and he was never seen again. It remains perilous to this day.
