Castell Sycharth

Castell Sycharth was the home of the last prince of Wales, Owain Glyndŵr. It was said to be a magnificent place, "eighteen mansions, fair wooden buildings on top of a green hill". Owain Glyndŵr was possessed of bardic powers. He could summon storms and wind, had a degree of invulnerability and could escape from any danger. Sycharth was burned by Prince Henry (later V) in 1403. However, the green hill remains, and so does Owain. He escaped into the half-world of Annwfn, until his prophesied return.
For about 15 years, Owain Glyndŵr led a guerrilla and conventional campaign that controlled much of Wales. He declared himself Prince of Wales in 1400. Ultimately, the rebellion against England was unsuccessful – it was the last major Welsh attempt to throw off English rule
During the uprising, Sycharth was targeted by royal forces, led by Prince Henry – who later became King Henry V. In May 1403, Prince Henry led troops that attacked and destroyed Sycharth, aiming to supress the rebellion. Glyndŵr had already left Sycharth and he continued guerrilla warfare against the English for nearly 10 more years.
In about 1411, Glyndŵr mysteriously vanished from history. After his disappearance, he was seen by the abbot of Valle Crucis Abbey – “You are up early, abbot” said Glyndŵr. “Nay, my lord Owen” the abbot replied, recognising him. “It is you who are up too early – a hundred years too early” – a prophetic vision of the rise of the Tudor dynasty, to which Glyndŵr was related. Glyndŵr then vanished into the early morning mist and was never seen again. A prophecy - the Darogan - tells that he will return when Wales has need of him.
