The Mynydd Hiraethog landscape is home to the spirit of a vengeful Roman centurion, Caecilius Avitus, optio of the twentieth legion Valeria Victrix, stationed at Caer (Chester).
He came from Emerita Augusta (Spain), and died in battle at the age of 34 after serving 15 years in the Roman Army. A skilled warrior, he was honoured by his descendants with an elaborate tombstone. However, this was removed from his grave, and now stands in the Grosvenor Museum in Caer. Until it is replaced on the tomb, the spirit of Caecilius will continue to haunt the Mynydd Hiraethog. However, it's very difficult to know how this could be achieved as the location of the grave itself is not recorded.
WHAT'S IN THE AREA
The Hawk and Buckle is a seventeenth-century inn, but there has been a hostelry on the site since much earlier. It is a quiet, restful place in the centre of the village of Llanefydd in the plunging valleys and hills of Denbighshire.
It is the centre of a Site of Special Mythological Interest because of the unusual number of mythological sites in the vicinity.
The Inn is famed for its Myrddin’s Mist cocktail. Guidance is available to local mythological sites from the landlord - who is known to occasionally serve in armour.
