The Lost Village of Cefnllys

Do not visit after dark

Visit the village and castle, but we do not advise visiting at night. Take extreme care because the castle hill is supernaturally difficult to climb. This is because at some point it has been hit with a swyn cysgi, and no bard has been able to remove it. Many visitors have become exhausted whilst climbing what may appear to be an easy slope. Record and report your experience.

Information

Cefnllys is one of Wales’ most enigmatic places. It is a completely abandoned village, with very little trace of the settlement that was once there. Unlike most ruined castles, Cefnllys has vanished absolutely, with only the earthworks remaining. It is in fact the site of two fortresses, both of which were cursed and destroyed because they stood on a tomen, or enchanted hill, on the site of an earlier stronghold built by Prince Hafgan of Annwfn.
