The Arch is located on a bridge between the villages of Henllan & Llannefydd on the Llannefydd Road, and whilst it may be inspected in broad daylight, it must on no account be looked at directly between dusk and dawn.
The arch is notorious locally as a hazard, and has caused numerous accidents written off as simply traffic collisions. The structure is a porth (portal), and is frequented by a gwrach (witch). She will greet passers-by courteously, but if they reply this constitutes an acceptance akin to inviting a vampire into your home, with often deadly consequences.
In 1924, A gentleman was walking home from working on a farm in Llannefydd after work. He saw an old woman standing in the arch. He greeted her. She replied. He carried on his journey home. After less than a hundred yards the man fell dead. The coroner could not find any cause of the mans sudden demise.
Similar incidents date back at least to the 1700s.
WHAT'S IN THE AREA
The Hawk and Buckle is a seventeenth-century inn, but there has been a hostelry on the site since much earlier. It is a quiet, restful place in the centre of the village of Llanefydd in the plunging valleys and hills of Denbighshire.
It is the centre of a Site of Special Mythological Interest because of the unusual number of mythological sites in the vicinity.
The Inn is famed for its Myrddin’s Mist cocktail. Guidance is available to local mythological sites from the landlord - who is known to occasionally serve in armour.
